SURGICAL PROCEDURES

Objective:
to increase or decrease the chin, providing harmony to the face.

The harmony of the face involves the facial profile, with the balance between the face, nose, and chin. Because of genetics, many people may have a chin that does not match the proportion of the face, either because it is too big or too small, or even a jaw too far forward (prognathism) or backward (retrognathism). Thus, Mentoplasty, also known as Chin Surgery, is the right choice to restore this naturalness and, consequently, the patient’s self-esteem and self-confidence.

After analyzing all points on the face, the doctor has some options to achieve facial harmony. When it comes to increasing the chin, the bone of the site can be moved forward or, if necessary, put a silicone implant or an integrated bone material such as Medpor or Porex. In case of an indication for chin projection decreasing, part of the bone can be removed to achieve balance. In the facial analysis, the surgeon must evaluate the dental occlusion, which can be normal or altered, such as crossbite, Class II (backward), or Class III (forward) occlusion. Moreover, as the chin directly interferes with the patient’s bite, some modifications to the jaw may be indicated to improve chewing and occlusion. In the Perfiloplasty, Mentoplasty is often done with Rhinoplasty, because the nose affects the proportion of the whole.

Preoperative: before the procedure, the patient answers a questionnaire about his lifestyle, his health, and expectations. In the consultation, laboratory tests are requested and based upon the results, recommendations are provided for taking or pausing the use of certain medications as well as for adjusting the doses of the routine medications being taken; also, the patient is advised to stop smoking and the consumption of alcoholic beverages days before surgery – it is also important to avoid aspirin, anti-inflammatories, anticoagulants and natural remedies. Absolute fasting of 8 hours is required on the day before the surgery (solid and liquid foods).
It is important to perform facial measurements and careful analysis to determine the best conduct.

Postoperative: after the procedure, the doctor prescribes the needed medications to optimize the cicatrization process as well as to prevent infections. Right after the procedure, the orientation is to sleep with your head up, avoiding the side position; feeding is done through fluids in the first days. It is important to avoid sun exposure, smoking, and physical exercise. Up to 2 weeks, it is normal for the operated area to be swollen and also numbness of the lip and chin. After this period, the patient can return to normal activities, such as working.
